Example: Multiply 23 × 12

Step 1: Multiply the last digits: 3 × 2 = 6.

Step 2: Cross-multiply and add: (2 × 2) + (3 × 1) = 4 + 3 = 7.

Step 3: Multiply the first digit: 2 × 1 = 2.

Step 4: Combine the numbers obtained in step 3, step 2, and step 1.

So, the answer is 276.

2. Multiplying Numbers Using a Base

Example: Multiply 97 × 94.

Step 1: The closest power of 10 for these numbers is 100

Step 2: Find the differences between each of these numbers and its closest power of 10:

97 - 100 = (-3)

94 - 100 = (-6)

Step 3: Multiply these two numbers:(-3) x (-6) = 1.

Step 4: Add one of the two given numbers to the difference of the other number from the closest power of 10.

97 + (94 – 100) = 97 - 6 = 91

Step 5: Combine the numbers obtained in step 3 and step 2 to get the answer.

So, the answer is 9118.

3. Multiplication of Two Numbers Between 11 and 19

This trick is useful for finding the product of two-digit numbers between 11 and 19.

Example: Multiply 13 x 18.

Step 1: Add the larger number to the unit digit of the smaller number:

18 + 13 = 21

Step 2: Multiply the answer obtained from step 1 by 10:

21 x 10 = 210

Step 3: Multiply the unit digits of both the numbers:

3 x 8 = 24

Step 4: Add the numbers obtained from Step 2 and Step 3:

210 + 24 = 234

4. Multiplying by 11 Trick

5. Multiplication Tricks With all-9 Numbers

When one number is multiplied by another number having all digits as 9, then we can apply this method.

There can be three possibilities as follows:

When the number of digits in the multiplier (number with 9s) is the same as the multiplicand (other number)

Example: Multiply 64 x 99.

Step 1: The first part of the answer is one less than the number:

64 - 1 = 63

Step 2: The second part of the answer is the complement of the multiplicand:

100 – 64 = 36

Step 3: Combine numbers obtained in step 2 and step 3.

So, the answer is 6336.

When the number of digits in the multiplier (number with 9s) is less than the multiplicand (other number)

Example: Multiply 75 x 9.

Step 1: If the multiplicand starts with 1, subtract 2 from it. If the multiplicand starts with 2, subtract 3 from it, and so on.

So, the first part of the answer is 75 – 8 = 67.

Step 2: The second part of the answer is the complement of the last digit of the multiplicand.

So, the second part of the answer: 10 – 5 = 5

So, the answer is 675.

When the number of digits in the multiplier (number with 9s) is more than the multiplicand (other number)

Example: Multiply 8 x 99.

Step 1: The first part of the answer is 1 less than the multiplicand:

8-1 = 7

Step 2: The second part of the answer is 9.

Step 3: The third part of the answer is the complement of the multiplicand:

10 - 8 = 2

So, the answer is 792.

1. Division by Multiples of 5

Example: Divide 1640 ÷ 25.

Step 1: Multiply the divisor to make the divisor a power of 10. So, we get 25 x 4 = 100.

Step 2: Multiply the dividend also by 4. So, we get 1640 x 4 = 6560.

Step 3: Make the division by 100. So, the answer is 65.6.

2. Division by 9

This method allows students to apply some systematic steps of Vedic math tricks to get a solution when divided by the number 9.

Example: Divide 347 by 9.

Step 1: The first digit of the quotient is the leftmost digit of the given number, which is 3.

Step 2: The digit obtained in step 1 is added to the next dividend digit. So, we get 3 + 4 = 7. It is the next digit of the quotient.

Step 3: The digit obtained in step 2 is added to the next digit of the dividend. So, we get 7 + 7 = 14.

Step 4: Since 14 is greater than 9, we add 1 to the last digit of the quotient. So, we get 7 + 1 = 8. It is the second digit of the final quotient.

Step 5: We subtract 9 from 14 and get 14 - 9 = 5.

So, the quotient is 38 and the remainder is 5.
